Noordzee Terminal welcomes largest containership in the world and breaks 'call size' and 'vessel rate' record

12 juni 2020 | On Thursday June 11, 2020 PSA Antwerp welcomed the HMM Algeciras at  Noordzee Terminal. With a length of 400 meters, a width of 61 meters and a total capacity of 23,964 TEU it is currently the largest container vessel in the world.

The mega vessel came alongside at Noordzee Terminal on Thursday evening around 8pm and departed Saturday morning to set sail for London. The ship was handled non-stop for 29 hours and broke the call size record for most containers handled on one ship during a single visit to Noordzee Terminal: a total of 6,553 containers were handled.

In addition to the record of 'largest container ship in the world' and 'largest call size at Noordzee Terminal', also an impressive 'vessel rate' record was broken. For 29 hours straight, an average of 226 containers per hour were loaded and unloaded on the HMM Algeciras.
PSA Antwerp deployed its largest quay cranes to handle this vessel; these are 52 meters high, have an outreach of 26 containers wide and are among the largest in the world.
