MSC Tessa Breaks Depth Record in Deurganckdok

On Monday, the container ship MSC Tessa docked with an impressive draft of 16 meters, setting a new record. The 400-meter-long container giant smoothly arrived at our MPET container terminal in Deurganckdok for the second time.

The voyage of the MSC Tessa was the last of six test journeys where the draft was gradually increased from 15.7 to 16 meters. By raising the maximum allowable draft by about 30 centimeters, the loading capacity is also increased, allowing for the transportation of approximately a thousand additional containers to Antwerp. This increased draft is necessary to continue receiving the largest seafaring vessels in the future.

I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen, and I’m truly proud that the MSC Tessa docked at our terminal.

Johan Van Daele, CEO of MPET: "I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen, and I’m truly proud that the MSC Tessa docked at our terminal. To strengthen the competitive position of our port and boost imports from places like the Far East, we must continue to work on achieving greater draft. At MPET, we are well-prepared, as demonstrated by the efficient handling of the MSC Tessa."

Annick De Ridder also referred to this as a significant milestone for the Port of Antwerp, saying, "A draft of 16 meters not only reinforces our position as the first port of call but also makes us more competitive in the Far East market."
