Project Emerald

Building the Terminal of the Future

PSA Antwerp and Port of Antwerp-Bruges have joined forces to significantly transform Europa Terminal through Project Emerald over the coming years. We’re building a new quay wall with deeper drafts, modernizing the terminal to accommodate the largest ships, increase capacity, and contribute to a climate-neutral port.

Why are we evolving to Europa Terminal 2.0?

1. Increased container capacity

Capacity +41%
1.7 to 2.4 MTEU containers per year

New: 40 Automatic Stacking Cranes
ASCs stack containers higher (6 in stead of 4 high)

2. Emission reduction

Reduction fine dust, CO2 and nitrogen
through electrification & new technologies

3. Mega vessel capacity

Our infrastructure is growing alongside the latest mega vessels. In fact, consolidating containers on large vessels is more efficient and sustainable.

New: 11 Semi-automatic quay cranes
with a reach of 26 containers

New quay wall with a depth of 17.5m
for vessels with a draft of up to 16.5m

4. Safety

Project Emerald presents an opportunity to further enhance the safety of our employees. By separating people from machines, the project significantly contributes to our goal of a safer, accident-free workplace.

Renovation in 3 phases

To ensure continuous operation, we’ve strategically divided the works into 3 phases over the next 10 years, guaranteeing that two-thirds of Europa Terminal remains fully operational throughout the process.

Each phase consists of two main construction sites: PSA is responsible for the yard works, while Port of Antwerp-Bruges focuses on the quay wall, including deepening it to 17.5m and implementing a 4-degree rotation.
